Bennedict Mathurin just pulled off the rare NBA contract heist where everyone technically wins, but one side definitely feels smarter. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the 24-year-old guard is heading to the New Orleans Pelicans on a two-year, $16 million deal that includes a player option.

To make this happen, Mathurin’s reps basically walked into the Los Angeles Clippers' front office and politely asked them to withdraw his $8.8 million qualifying offer. The Clippers actually agreed, which is the NBA equivalent of letting your ex keep the apartment because you didn't want to deal with the paperwork.

Mathurin is coming off a season where he averaged 17.6 points and 5.4 rebounds, including a casual 38-point explosion in his Clippers home debut. By taking this short-term deal with a player option, he gets a guaranteed bag now and a VIP pass to unrestricted free agency next summer. He prioritized flexibility over team control, and it is hard to blame him.

New Orleans had to do some serious financial gymnastics to pull this off. They have been actively exploring the trade market for Jordan Hawkins and his $7 million salary just to dodge the luxury tax and clear the mid-level exception space for Mathurin. When a front office starts aggressively clearing out the couch cushions, you know they are desperate for scoring depth.

The Chicago Bulls, Milwaukee Bucks, and Dallas Mavericks were all reportedly circling, but the Pelicans closed the deal. For anyone looking at the futures market, adding a guy who can get you nearly 18 points a night on a bargain contract is exactly the kind of move that swings late-season rotation battles, even if his 31.5 percent shooting from deep is a slight buzzkill.

Now the pressure shifts to New Orleans to figure out the rest of their roster math before opening night. As for Mathurin, he just secured the ultimate prove-it deal. If he stays healthy and keeps filling it up, that $16 million is going to look like pocket change by this time next year.
