Braves Finally Get Pitching Relief as Reynaldo Lopez Returns

The Atlanta Braves are finally activating a healthy starting pitcher, an event so rare in 2026 it probably requires a parade. Reynaldo Lopez is officially coming off the injured list to take the mound on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

Lopez has been parked on the shelf since late July with left knee inflammation. Getting him back is a massive sigh of relief for a franchise that has spent the entire summer watching its pitching staff turn into a full-blown medical ward.

Atlanta’s rotation depth has been tested so severely this year that they were probably two weeks away from holding open tryouts in the Truist Park parking lot. With Spencer Strider and half the farm system already out of commission, getting a proven arm back is the only thing keeping this staff from being held together by duct tape and pure vibes.

The timing could not be better for a team trying to stop the bleeding. The Braves just dropped three of four games to the Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend and desperately need someone to eat innings and keep the bullpen seated.

Lopez proved his knee could handle the workload by throwing five innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Gwinnett last week. If he can channel even a fraction of the guy who posted a 1.99 ERA over 135 innings back in 2024, Atlanta is in business.

Anyone looking at the betting lines for Wednesday will immediately notice the bump Atlanta gets just by having a recognizable, healthy adult throwing the baseball.

If Lopez can find the strike zone early against Tampa Bay, the Braves might actually have enough gas left in the tank to survive this September playoff push.
