Buccaneers Hand Starting QB Job to Undrafted Rookie Jalon Daniels After Baker Mayfield Injury

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are officially out of emergency glass to break. Following a brutal 0-3 start to the season, Adam Schefter reports that undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels is taking over the starting role.

This is not exactly a strategic masterclass by the coaching staff. The move comes out of pure necessity after Baker Mayfield suffered a dislocated right thumb during Sunday's 23-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Handing the offense to an undrafted rookie when your season is already on life support is like trying to put out a grease fire with a water balloon. Daniels stepped in for relief duty against Minnesota and the results were predictably grim.

The former Kansas standout finished his NFL debut going 0-for-3 passing with an interception and a sack. His only positive contribution to the box score was a single 9-yard scramble, which is not exactly the kind of stat line that strikes fear into opposing defensive coordinators.

Tampa Bay is currently sitting in the basement of the NFC South. With Mayfield sidelined and the offense looking completely lost, the front office is essentially throwing Daniels into the deep end to see if he can tread water.

The Buccaneers host the Green Bay Packers next Sunday afternoon. If you are looking at the betting lines for Week 4, just remember you are being asked to put your money on a rookie making his first career start after putting up a literal zero passer rating. Proceed with extreme caution.
