The Chargers just lost their best middle-of-the-field weapon, and their grand solution is to sign a guy whose primary NFL skill is running wind sprints.
David Njoku is officially heading to injured reserve after getting carted off during Sunday's ugly 26-14 loss to the Raiders. To patch the hole, Los Angeles signed veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to the active roster and tossed long snapper Spencer Triplett onto the practice squad.
"Adam Schefter reported the roster moves, noting Njoku's move to IR and the signings of Valdes-Scantling and Triplett."
Njoku going down is a brutal blow for an offense that desperately needs reliable targets. He had five catches for 58 yards this season before his knee gave out early in the second quarter against Las Vegas. Now, he is locked out for at least four games with a fibula bruise, leaving a massive void in the short passing game.
Enter MVS. If you need a receiver to run 45 yards in a straight line and either catch a miracle touchdown or drop a perfectly placed deep ball, he is your guy. Valdes-Scantling logged just 14 catches for 120 yards and one touchdown in 2025. That is the statistical equivalent of showing up to a group project just to format the title slide.
For anyone holding Chargers futures or betting their weekly player props, this completely scrambles the math. You cannot just replace a high-volume tight end with a pure deep threat and expect the offensive rhythm to stay the same.
Los Angeles has to figure out how to move the chains without their primary safety blanket. We will find out soon enough if MVS can actually stretch the field, or if he is just out there getting his cardio in while Njoku starts his month-long rehab.
Key stats
Njoku: 5 receptions, 58 yards in 2026
MVS: 14 receptions, 120 yards, 1 TD in 2025
Chargers lost to Raiders 26-14 in Week 2
What's next
Njoku will miss at least the next four games, forcing the Chargers to adjust their passing attack and integrate Valdes-Scantling immediately.
