Chargers Lose Two Tight Ends to IR in a Single Brutal Update

The Los Angeles Chargers just lost two tight ends to injured reserve in the same transaction, which is the kind of roster update that usually only happens when a team bus breaks down.

Adam Schefter reported Monday that Los Angeles is placing both David Njoku and Charlie Kolar on IR following a brutal Week 2 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. Njoku is dealing with a fibula injury after being carted off in the second quarter, while Kolar sustained a forearm injury in the second half and left the stadium in a sling.

The Chargers are now sitting in an 0-2 hole after dropping that 26-14 game to the Raiders. Before exiting, Kolar managed three catches for 21 yards, but the real damage here is to the front office's offseason blueprint.

Los Angeles spent the spring building a three-headed tight end committee, handing Kolar a three-year deal averaging $8.1 million and bringing in Njoku on a one-year pact. Two weeks into the season, that expensive committee has been reduced to just second-year pro Oronde Gadsden II, who did manage to catch a touchdown from Justin Herbert on Sunday before the walls caved in.

Gadsden is now the last man standing in a positional room that just got completely wiped out. With a Week 3 road trip against the Buffalo Bills looming, the betting markets are not going to be kind to a winless team missing half its passing targets. The Chargers are going to have to find some healthy bodies fast, or Herbert is going to be throwing to offensive linemen by October.
