The Los Angeles Chargers are already staring down the barrel of a disastrous offensive week, and it is only Thursday. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, wide receiver Ladd McConkey missed his second straight practice with a rib injury and is now highly unlikely to play Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Losing your top receiver in Week 2 is bad. Losing the only guy who seemed to know the playbook in Week 1 is a full-blown crisis.
"Adam Schefter reported that McConkey did not practice for the second straight day and is unlikely to be available for Sunday's game."
McConkey took a brutal shot to the ribs from Arizona Cardinals defender Mack Wilson Jr. during the third quarter of last week's 26-14 loss. Before getting folded in half, McConkey was the entire Los Angeles passing attack, racking up five catches for 82 yards and a touchdown.
To put that into perspective, the rest of the Chargers' wide receiver room looked like a group project where nobody did the reading. Quentin Johnston, who is supposed to be a staple in this offense, managed a grand total of two catches for 17 yards.
If you are holding Chargers pass-catchers in fantasy or staring at Justin Herbert's passing props for this weekend, it is officially time to pivot. Herbert is a great quarterback, but he cannot throw the ball to himself.
The stakes for Sunday are already uncomfortably high. The Chargers are 0-1 and walking into a divisional matchup against a Raiders squad that just comfortably handled Miami 27-13.
Schefter's report makes it clear that Los Angeles is preparing for life without their top target this weekend. If Johnston and the rest of the depth chart cannot figure out how to get open against Las Vegas, the Chargers are going to be in for a miserable Sunday afternoon.
