The Cleveland Browns are reportedly giving the Deshaun Watson experience exactly two more weeks to look like a functional NFL offense before pulling the plug.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Cleveland plans to reevaluate its quarterback situation after its Week 2 road trip to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If things do not drastically improve, fifth-round rookie Shedeur Sanders could be handed the keys as early as Week 3.

Giving a starting quarterback a two-game ultimatum is the NFL equivalent of a manager telling you they just want to put some time on your calendar to chat. It never ends well. After getting completely dismantled 34-10 by the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1, the writing is not just on the wall for Watson, it is being broadcast in neon letters.

You almost have to respect the sheer stubbornness it took for Cleveland to roll Watson out there again in the first place. He is coming off two separate Achilles tears in a three-month span between late 2024 and early 2025. Before his body gave out last season, he ranked 31st in the league in yards per attempt at a dismal 5.3.

The Browns are still chained to the most radioactive fully guaranteed contract in sports history, but at a certain point, the sunk cost fallacy has to give way to basic self-preservation. Bettors holding Cleveland win-total tickets are already sweating, and a switch to a rookie quarterback in September usually means a team is waving the white flag on the season.

Sanders was a fifth-round pick for a reason, but he brings functional mobility and a clean slate to a locker room that desperately needs one. If Watson looks like a shell of himself again against the Buccaneers this Sunday, expect the Browns to finally rip the band-aid off and see what the rookie can do.
