Devils Acquire Luke Evangelista in Trade Featuring the Most Absurd Conditional Pick of the Year

The NHL trade market just delivered a masterpiece of conditional draft pick absurdity, and Luke Evangelista is heading to New Jersey because of it.

Hockey insider Frank Seravalli broke the news that the Nashville Predators are shipping the 24-year-old forward to the New Jersey Devils. In return, Nashville gets a 2028 second-round pick from New Jersey and a 2028 first-round pick from the Colorado Avalanche that comes with its own terms-of-service agreement.

The condition on the first-rounder reads like an LSAT logic game. If Colorado's 2027 first-round pick does not go to the Toronto Maple Leafs, or if the 2028 pick lands in the top 10, Nashville gets Colorado's 2029 first-rounder instead. We are literally trading assets for the next presidential administration based on what Toronto does two years from now.

Evangelista desperately needed a change of scenery after a weird stretch in Smashville. He had a very public contract standoff with Predators GM Barry Trotz last fall, and his production dipped to just 14 points in 39 games before a lower-body injury derailed his winter.

For the Devils, this is a pure upside swing to bolster their forward depth. Bettors looking at New Jersey's futures will like the injection of young talent without giving up a roster player today, even if Evangelista is currently trying to shake off a cold streak.

Now Evangelista gets a fresh start in a fast-paced Devils system where he can just focus on playing hockey. As for Nashville, they can spend the next three years tracking Colorado's standings and Toronto's transaction log just to figure out when they actually get to draft someone.
