The Philadelphia Eagles' running back room has officially reached the break-glass-in-case-of-emergency stage of the season.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Wednesday that the Eagles are elevating Dameon Pierce to the 53-man roster. The move comes out of pure necessity, with both Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby suddenly dealing with injuries.
"ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that the Eagles are elevating RB Dameon Pierce to the 53-man roster due to injuries to Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby."
Going from Saquon Barkley to a practice squad elevation is the football equivalent of trading in a Ferrari for a 2008 Honda Civic with a check engine light on. It will get you from point A to point B, but nobody is going to be intimidated when you pull up to the stadium.
Philadelphia is coming off a frustrating 24-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams this past Sunday. Losing a tight game is bad enough, but losing the engine of your offense and his primary backup in the same window is a full-blown crisis.
Pierce is not exactly a random guy off the street. He looked like a future star during his rookie year with the Houston Texans before completely falling off the fantasy football radar. Now, he is suddenly thrust back into the spotlight on a team with massive playoff expectations.
If you are scrambling on the waiver wire or looking at rushing props for the weekend, Pierce is suddenly the most interesting name on the board. The volume has to go somewhere, and right now, he is the last man standing.
The Eagles will need to figure out exactly how long Barkley and Bigsby are sidelined. Until then, Philadelphia is going to find out exactly how much juice Pierce has left in the tank.
