Falcons Camp Chaos: Jalon Walker's ACL Heartbreak and Bijan's Cautious Return

Training camp is mostly just a festival of unearned optimism until the injury cart makes an appearance. The Atlanta Falcons got their brutal August reality check on Tuesday when edge rusher Jalon Walker went down late in practice.

According to Ian Rapoport and Steve Wyche, the team expects Walker suffered a torn ACL. Losing a pass rusher before anyone has even played a fake football game is a devastating blow to a defense that desperately needs to get after the quarterback this season.

Under center, the quarterback situation is a slow drip of progress. Tua Tagovailoa dipped his toes into 11-on-11 work, completing three of his four passes, and told reporters he hopes to be fully cleared by Wednesday.

Until Tua is fully unleashed, the backup reps are providing some genuine sicko entertainment. Cooper Rush took the first-team offense for a two-minute drill and actually managed to drive them into field-goal range. Meanwhile, Jack Strand was stuck running with the second unit and failed to move the chains in his two-minute opportunity, and Michael Penix was relegated to 7-on-7 duty.

If you are holding a ticket on Atlanta's win total or division futures, the Walker injury is the only thing that truly moves the needle right now. You can survive a cautious August approach with your star running back and starting quarterback, but you cannot magically replace edge depth once the real games start. At least rookie linebacker Harold Perkins is starting to get consistent run with the first team to help plug some gaps.

The intensity is about to spike regardless. The Falcons are putting the pads back on Wednesday morning. We will see if Tua actually gets the green light for a full workload, and if the coaching staff finally lets Bijan do more than just stand around looking expensive.
