Falcons Lose Defensive Anchor Divine Deablo to Arm Injury Against Bears

The Atlanta Falcons just lost the brain of their defense. ESPN’s Marc Raimondi reported Sunday that linebacker Divine Deablo has been officially downgraded to out with an arm injury against the Chicago Bears.

Losing your middle linebacker mid-game is bad enough. Losing the guy who wears the green dot and calls the plays is like losing your GPS in the middle of a five-lane highway merge. You can still drive, but you are probably going to crash into a guardrail.

"LB Divine Deablo (arm) has been downgraded to OUT."

Deablo is not just a guy taking up space on the field. He is Atlanta’s second-leading tackler with 26 combined stops through the first five weeks of the season. His size and athleticism are the glue holding defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich’s front seven together, and removing him from the equation completely changes the math for the opposing offense.

The timing could not be worse for a 2-3 Falcons team trying to keep their season from circling the drain. The Bears just got quarterback Caleb Williams back under center after a three-game absence. Anyone holding tickets on Chicago offensive props has to feel pretty good about facing a defense that suddenly has to scramble its communication hierarchy on the fly.

With Deablo sidelined, Atlanta has to throw rookies Kendal Daniels and Harold Perkins Jr. into the fire, or lean heavily on veterans like Christian Harris and Josh Woods. Asking rookies to suddenly diagnose an NFL offense in real time is a recipe for blown coverages and wide-open tight ends.

The immediate reality is that the Falcons have to survive the rest of this game without their defensive anchor. The long-term reality might be much darker, as early whispers suggest a potential forearm fracture that could sideline him for weeks. We will find out soon enough if Atlanta needs to start shopping for a new green dot.
