Fred VanVleet Sits Out Saturday as Rockets Play the Long Game

Fred VanVleet is officially sitting out Saturday for "injury management," which is the NBA's polite way of saying they are treating their veteran point guard like a fragile museum exhibit.

Underdog NBA confirmed the Houston Rockets are keeping him off the floor. If you were banking on his assists prop to anchor your weekend parlay, it is time to find a new financial advisor.

"Underdog NBA reported: 'Fred VanVleet (injury management) listed out Saturday.'"

You cannot exactly blame Houston for playing it safe. VanVleet missed the entire 2025-26 season with a torn right ACL. When a guy spends a full calendar year rebuilding his knee, you do not throw him into a random Saturday night grinder just to prove a point.

The caution makes perfect sense when you look at how sharp he has looked since returning. He recently carved up the Mavericks with 17 points, seven assists, and five threes while committing just one turnover. He followed that up with an 11-assist masterclass in another game.

The Rockets need that version of VanVleet for the actual playoff push. Playing a veteran guard coming off major knee surgery on heavy minutes in October is the kind of decision that gets a front office executive's keycard quietly deactivated.

With VanVleet in street clothes, the Houston backcourt is suddenly wide open. Expect Amen Thompson to get the keys to the offense, though Marcus Smart will likely absorb some of the defensive assignments.

Keep a close eye on Thompson's usage rate tonight. If you need a fantasy streamer or a fresh angle at the sportsbook, the young guard is about to get all the volume he can handle.
