Hawks Trade Zaccharie Risacher and Five Picks in Massive Defensive Overhaul

The Atlanta Hawks have officially reached the "panic and buy a bunch of defensive wings" stage of team building. According to Underdog NBA, Atlanta's offseason overhaul is complete, and the final receipt is absolutely staggering.

The Hawks acquired Lu Dort from the Oklahoma City Thunder, along with Aaron Wiggins and Dorian Finney-Smith. To land that trio of gritty role players, they shipped out 2024 number one overall pick Zaccharie Risacher to the Dallas Mavericks, dumped sharpshooter Buddy Hield and Ryan Nembhard, and sent out a whopping five second-round picks.

Trading five draft picks and a recent top overall selection for three guys who profile as the fourth-best starter on a playoff team is certainly a choice. It looks exactly like a front office that got tired of watching opposing guards score at will and decided to overcorrect by acquiring every available perimeter defender on the market.

Bailing on Risacher this fast is the real story here. The former top pick was recently benched in favor of CJ McCollum after struggling heavily with his handle and finishing at the rim. When a supposed franchise savior turns into a trade chip before his third season even starts, that is a screaming admission of failure from the scouting department.

On the incoming side, Dort brings elite point-of-attack defense but plenty of offensive and physical baggage. He is shooting a brutal 36.5 percent from the floor over his last 14 games and spent most of last season battling a laundry list of knee, foot, and shoulder injuries.

Bettors looking at Atlanta's upcoming win totals need to seriously evaluate whether Dort can stay on the floor long enough to anchor this new identity. Adding Wiggins and Finney-Smith gives them legitimate depth, but you have to wonder where the offensive spacing is going to come from with Hield out of the picture.

The Hawks are betting the farm that a tough, defensive-minded rotation will finally fix their structural flaws.
