Jacob Wilson's Shoulder Surgery Puts a Bow on Another Miserable A's Season

The Oakland Athletics' 2026 season has officially reached the "let's just get the surgeries out of the way" phase of the calendar.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, A's shortstop Jacob Wilson is undergoing left shoulder surgery, officially pulling the plug on a frustrating, stop-and-start campaign.

"Manager Mark Kotsay noted that Wilson had been playing through the shoulder injury since returning from the IL, showing grit but ultimately failing to regain full range of motion."

Wilson originally subluxated the shoulder back in May while diving for a Gunnar Henderson grounder. He tried to tough it out, returning a month later, but playing through a bad shoulder in the major leagues is like trying to eat soup with a fork. You can go through the motions, but you are not getting the results you want.

The numbers paint a pretty clear picture of a guy swinging at less than 100 percent. After cementing himself as a legitimate big leaguer last year with a .311 average and a 121 wRC+, Wilson looked completely out of sorts in 2026. He finishes this season hitting a hollow .266 with a .686 OPS and an 88 wRC+ across 80 games.

For the A's, losing their starting shortstop is just another drop in a very depressing bucket. Oakland is sitting at an MLB-worst 49-78, and manager Mark Kotsay noted Wilson will become the 13th player on their injured list. If you are looking at the betting board for their upcoming series against the Houston Astros, just know the A's are now rolling out a shortstop committee of Darell Hernaiz, Alika Williams, and Donovan Walton.

The real conversation starts when Wilson gets healthy for spring training. His defense at short has been objectively terrible, logging minus-7 Defensive Runs Saved this year and minus-21 for his career. With 19-year-old phenom Leo De Vries currently in Double-A after coming over in the Mason Miller trade, Wilson might wake up from anesthesia to find out his future is at second or third base.

For now, Wilson gets a head start on his offseason rehab. The Athletics, meanwhile, have to actually play out the final month of this 49-win nightmare.
