Jets TE Mason Taylor Out Week-to-Week With Thumb Injury

The New York Jets are officially down a tight end, though you might not have noticed based on the box score. Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Mason Taylor is considered week-to-week with a thumb injury and will likely miss this week's matchup against the Detroit Lions.

Taylor picked up the injury late in Sunday's brutal 20-17 overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers. Before heading to the sideline, the tight end had managed exactly one catch for negative two yards. That is the kind of stat line that makes you wonder if the thumb was actively working against him before the ball was even snapped.

"Ian Rapoport reported Taylor is 'considered week-to-week' and 'will likely miss this week vs the Lions.'"

Durability is becoming a frustrating theme for the 22-year-old. Taylor was already battling an ankle issue that limited him in practice earlier this month, and he missed the final four games of the 2025 season with a neck injury. Now, a bad thumb is sending him right back to the trainer's room.

With Taylor sidelined, the Jets are handing the keys to rookie first-round pick Kenyon Sadiq. Sadiq caught two passes for 17 yards after stepping in against Green Bay, which mathematically makes him an explosive vertical threat compared to what New York was getting out of the position beforehand.

Anyone looking at the betting lines for this week's game will have to factor in a rookie tight end making his first real start. Sadiq will be lining up against a Detroit defense that is desperately trying to bounce back after giving up 41 points in a double-digit loss to the Buffalo Bills last week.

Sadiq gets a massive audition as the primary target over the middle. If the rookie can consistently run routes that actually cross the line of scrimmage, Taylor might find himself fighting for his job whenever he is finally cleared to return.
