Just when Jonah Coleman looked like the guy in the Denver Broncos backfield, the injury report has officially tapped the brakes. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Friday that the rookie running back is ruled out for Sunday night’s game against the Los Angeles Rams with an ankle injury.
Coleman sprained the ankle during last week’s 20-13 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he somehow stayed in the game long enough to rack up 58 total yards and score his first career touchdown. Playing through an ankle sprain to get into the end zone is the kind of rookie adrenaline spike that makes you feel invincible right up until you try to walk to the kitchen on Wednesday morning.
"ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the final injury designations on Friday."
The good news for Denver is that the running back room is basically operating on a one-in, two-out rotation. J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey have both been cleared from the injury report and are good to go for Sunday Night Football.
Dobbins has been dealing with a hip issue but still managed 18 carries for 72 yards over the first two weeks. Harvey missed Week 2 entirely with a hamstring problem after putting up 41 scrimmage yards in the opener. For context, the Broncos are essentially trading Coleman's production for two guys who are finally stepping off the trainer's table at the exact same time.
This completely scrambles the board for anyone looking at rushing props this weekend. Trying to guess how Sean Payton splits carries between a returning Dobbins and a healthy Harvey is a puzzle that usually ends with a fullback vulturing a goal-line touchdown anyway.
The 2-0 Broncos get to test this newly reassembled backfield under the prime-time lights against a Rams defense that just held the New York Giants to six points. We will find out very quickly if Dobbins and Harvey are ready to carry the load, or if Denver is going to spend Sunday night missing their rookie.
