Nathaniel Wood Gets a Five-Day Pop Quiz at UFC Paris

Nathaniel Wood was supposed to fight a known quantity this weekend at UFC Paris. Instead, he is getting the MMA equivalent of a pop quiz he didn't study for.

Just five days before he walks into the Accor Arena, Wood has a brand new opponent. Mairon Santos pulled out for undisclosed reasons, leaving the UFC scrambling to find a warm body willing to step into the cage on less than a week's notice. Enter Pavel Andrusca.

Andrusca is an undefeated Moldovan prospect making his UFC debut. He boasts an 8-0 record with seven finishes, including first-round knockouts in his last two fights for UAE Warriors. Taking a fight on five days' notice against a guy with 29 professional bouts is either supreme confidence or absolute madness.

For Wood, this is a classic high-risk, low-reward nightmare. He is sitting on a four-fight win streak at featherweight, grinding out tough decisions over guys like Morgan Charriere and Losene Keita. He needs a ranked win to climb the ladder. Instead, he gets a dangerous, unknown 24-year-old who has absolutely nothing to lose and heavy hands to swing.

Late-notice swaps like this are a headache for everyone involved, especially the oddsmakers trying to set a line on a guy who was probably eating a croissant when his phone rang. Wood has to completely scrap his game plan for Santos and figure out a heavy-hitting debutant on the fly.
