Pirates Catcher Endy Rodriguez's Breakout Season Erased by Hip Surgery

Being a Pittsburgh Pirates fan right now requires the kind of emotional endurance usually reserved for deep-sea welders. Just when it looked like Endy Rodriguez was finally putting together a fully healthy breakout season, the injury bug came back to collect its tax. The 26-year-old catcher just underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip.

A seven-to-nine-month recovery timeline means Rodriguez is officially done for 2026 and will be racing the clock just to be ready for Opening Day next spring. If you are keeping track of the Pittsburgh medical chart at home, you might need a second whiteboard.

This one stings specifically because of how good Rodriguez looked at the plate. After missing all of 2024 with UCL surgery and battling through another arm procedure last year, he was finally mashing. He was hitting .260 with a .388 on-base percentage and a 138 wRC+, meaning he was producing 38 percent better than your average major league hitter.

Taking a bat that productive out of the lineup is a brutal blow for a team desperately trying to stay relevant in the National League wild-card picture. If you are looking at the Pirates' run totals or daily props, you have to factor in just how thin this roster is getting. They are already missing Mitch Keller on the mound and Ryan O'Hearn in the lineup.

The on-field product is already showing the cracks. Pittsburgh just dropped two of three to the San Diego Padres after getting swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers, scoring a grand total of 11 runs across those six games. You do not need an advanced analytics degree to know that subtracting your best-hitting catcher from a struggling offense is a recipe for a rough September.

The Pirates now head to St. Louis for a weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals with Henry Davis and Rafael Flores left to hold down the catching duties. Davis has been a defensive upgrade but is currently sporting a batting average that looks like a bad GPA. Pittsburgh has to find a way to manufacture runs immediately, or this season is going to quietly fade to black long before Rodriguez gets his crutches off.
