Saints Lose DT Bryan Bresee to Season-Ending ACL Tear

Training camp injuries are the absolute worst part of the NFL calendar. You spend six months talking yourself into a team's ceiling, and then one awkward step in August completely changes the math.

That is exactly what happened in New Orleans. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Friday that Saints defensive tackle Bryan Bresee officially tore his ACL and has been placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Losing a starting-caliber defensive tackle before the regular season even kicks off is a brutal blow for a team trying to establish an identity in the trenches. Bresee was supposed to be a major anchor in the middle of that defensive line.

Instead, his season is over before it started, and the Saints are left scrambling to find a massive replacement when the free-agent market is basically just guys waiting by their phones on the couch.

When you lose a player with Bresee's upside this early, it forces a complete reshuffling of the defensive front. The rotation gets thinner, the run defense gets softer, and the pressure on the edge rushers to compensate goes through the roof.

Anyone holding a ticket on the Saints' defensive props or season win totals just got a harsh reality check. You cannot easily replace a foundational piece of the defensive interior in the middle of August.

New Orleans now has to figure out a contingency plan fast. Whether that means scouring the waiver wire or making a panic trade, the Saints defense is officially starting the year behind the eight ball.
