Sean Brady is officially out of the UFC Vegas 124 main event thanks to a gnarly staph infection in his knee, robbing us of one of the best welterweight matchups of the fall.
Staph infections are the undefeated, undisputed champions of ruining MMA cards. You can survive a grueling training camp full of professional killers trying to take your head off, only to get sidelined by microscopic bacteria you picked up from a gym mat.
"Brady stated he couldn't walk and spent three days in the hospital waiting for bacteria cultures to grow."
Brady was supposed to headline the November 7 card against Gabriel Bonfim in a massive clash between the number five and number six welterweights. Instead, Brady spent three days in the hospital hooked up to IV antibiotics after his knee swelled up so badly from a stationary bike ride that he literally could not walk.
With Brady out, Bonfim was also pulled from the card entirely, which completely scrambles the betting board for anyone who had early action on the main event. To patch the hole, the UFC panicked and elevated Johnny Walker against Waldo Cortes-Acosta to the headline slot. That is certainly a choice if you prefer chaotic, low-stakes heavyweight brawls over high-level technical title eliminators.
This is a brutal setback for Brady, who finally seemed to have his momentum back after a recent submission win over Kelvin Gastelum. He has a history of terrible luck with his body, previously missing a fight against Jack Della Maddalena due to another infection and a bout with Michel Pereira because of a groin issue.
Brady asked the UFC to push the fight to December, but the promotion told him those cards are already packed. Now he is targeting the January 16 event in Dallas to finally get back in the cage. Until then, the welterweight division has to hit pause on sorting out its top-five logjam, and the rest of the roster needs to invest in some heavy-duty bleach.
