The 49ers Defensive Line Has Turned Into a Triage Center

The San Francisco 49ers defensive line room has officially turned into a triage center. According to Adam Schefter, the team has watched six different defensive linemen go down with injuries over the last two weeks.

At this rate, Kyle Shanahan is going to be pulling guys out of the Levi's Stadium parking lot just to field a legal defense. Losing one or two guys in the trenches is standard football attrition, but losing an entire rotation before October is the kind of bad luck that makes you wonder if the facility was built on a cursed burial ground.

The headliner is Nick Bosa, who is expected to miss at least a few weeks after suffering a calf injury in practice. Bosa already has a brutal history of knee injuries, so any lower-body issue for the star pass rusher is enough to make the entire Bay Area hold its collective breath.

But the sheer volume of the collateral damage is what makes this absurd. Alfred Collins tore his patellar tendon and is done for the season. The 24-year-old was supposed to take a massive leap starting next to Osa Odighizuwa after logging 17 tackles and two forced fumbles as a rookie.

The casualty list just keeps going. Sam Okuayinonu has a broken foot, James Thompson Jr. is dealing with a high-ankle sprain, Romello Height broke his hand, and C.J. West has a bone chip in his knee. For context, 2025 first-round pick Mykel Williams is also still sitting on the PUP list recovering from an ACL tear.

If you are looking at the board for this weekend, this completely changes the math. The 49ers just cruised past the Miami Dolphins 35-13, but trying to replicate that defensive dominance without your entire front rotation is a massive problem.

The Arizona Cardinals are coming to town this Sunday, and their offensive line has to be thrilled looking at this injury report. San Francisco has a few days to figure out how to patch this unit together with Gracen Halton and whoever else is left standing, or things are going to get very ugly in the trenches.
