The basketball gods have officially called in a heat check on the Oklahoma City Thunder. According to Shams Charania, Jalen Williams suffered a dislocated left ankle and fractured fibula, while Cason Wallace tore the labrum in his left shoulder. Both are undergoing surgery and are expected to miss most, if not all, of the season.
Losing one elite rotation piece to a season-ending surgery is a brutal blow. Losing two on the exact same day feels like someone in the Thunder front office accidentally broke a mirror while walking under a ladder. Oklahoma City was rolling, and now they have to replace a massive chunk of their two-way identity overnight.
"Shams Charania reported the injuries and surgery timelines."
Before the injury bug turned into a full-blown plague, the Thunder were looking like an absolute wagon. They jumped out to a flawless 3-0 start, capping it off with a 108-101 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. Williams went down late in that Clippers game, abruptly halting a season where Oklahoma City was already boasting the second-best defensive rating in the league at 97.2.
The timing is especially brutal for Williams, who has spent the last couple of years battling a frustrating laundry list of hamstring and wrist issues. Now, the futures market is going to have to do some serious recalculating. You cannot just subtract two high-level perimeter defenders from a championship contender and expect the odds to stay frozen.
This puts an unbelievable amount of pressure on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren to carry the load. Gilgeous-Alexander is already pouring in 27.7 points a night, but he is going to need someone else to step up and absorb the minutes and defensive assignments that Williams and Wallace handled so effortlessly.
We will get our first look at the makeshift rotation when the Thunder host the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night. Oklahoma City still has the depth to win regular-season games, but surviving the Western Conference gauntlet without two of your most versatile weapons is a completely different math problem.
