Browns Stash Dillon Gabriel on IR, Clearing the Runway for Shedeur Sanders

The Cleveland Browns are officially putting Dillon Gabriel on ice to start the 2026 season. According to Adam Schefter, the team is placing the quarterback on injured reserve with a back injury, though he carries the all-important designated to return tag.

For a franchise that has been hoarding quarterbacks like they are limited-edition sneakers, this move finally forces some clarity. You can only keep so many guys with starting ambitions in one building before the tension boils over. Gabriel's back acting up conveniently solves a massive roster headache for at least the first month of the season.

Gabriel is unfortunately no stranger to the medical tent. He missed time last November with a concussion against the Baltimore Ravens, a game where he managed 68 yards on 10 attempts before exiting. That injury opened the door for Shedeur Sanders to take the reins, and Sanders ended up keeping the job even after Gabriel cleared the league's protocol.

Now, the Browns are staring down the start of the regular season fresh off a 37-13 preseason drubbing of the New England Patriots. With Gabriel sidelined for a minimum of four games, the betting markets will not have to guess who is actually taking snaps in September. It is a straight shootout between Sanders and Kenny Pickett, which is a sentence that would have sounded completely unhinged a couple of years ago.
