Case Keenum is Starting for the Bears Because Time is a Flat Circle

The Chicago Bears are officially handing the keys to a 38-year-old quarterback who was reportedly ready to retire last year.

According to Ian Rapoport, Case Keenum is expected to start under center for Chicago tonight against the Philadelphia Eagles. Franchise cornerstone Caleb Williams has already been ruled out with a hamstring injury. While backup Tyson Bagent finally cleared concussion protocol on Sunday after practicing just once this week, the Bears are rolling with the veteran.

Keenum starting a Monday Night Football game in 2026 sounds like a glitch in a Madden simulation. The 14-year journeyman has not started a regular-season game since a brief cameo for the Houston Texans in 2023. He was literally planning his retirement before Bears coach Ben Johnson talked him into moving to Chicago to be an emergency clipboard holder.

Now that emergency glass has been shattered. Williams tweaked his hamstring in the fourth quarter against the Minnesota Vikings last week, snapping a streak of 38 consecutive starts since he was drafted first overall in 2024. Bagent stepped in, immediately suffered a concussion, and left the depth chart in shambles.

Anyone holding a ticket on the Bears covering the spread tonight is suddenly relying on a guy who threw three interceptions on 53 pass attempts the last time he saw meaningful action. The Eagles defense has to be salivating at the prospect of facing a static target behind the line of scrimmage instead of chasing Williams around the yard.

Keenum just needs to survive the night and keep the offense functional enough to avoid a national television disaster. After the final whistle, all eyes in Chicago will immediately pivot back to the medical tent to see if Williams can get his hamstring right for Week 4.
