The Washington Commanders are officially out of healthy bodies to run routes.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that Washington has ruled out wide receivers Dyami Brown and Treylon Burks for their upcoming matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
"Jeremy Fowler noted we 'should see plenty of Antonio Williams and Stefon Diggs vs Rams.'"
If you are a Commanders fan, or just someone who enjoys watching a functional passing offense, this is the part where you start sweating. Washington's depth chart currently looks like a sign-up sheet for a rec league team that forgot to recruit.
The receiver room was already in crisis mode after Terry McLaurin was lost for the season to a torn patellar tendon. Brown was not exactly lighting the league on fire—he has just nine catches for 94 yards on the year—but he was at least a warm body who knew the playbook. Now, the target tree has been chopped down to a single branch.
Fowler noted we should expect a heavy dose of Stefon Diggs and Antonio Williams against Los Angeles. For anyone staring at player prop totals or setting a DFS lineup, this is the definition of forced volume. Diggs is going to get peppered with targets simply because the quarterback has no one else to look at.
Washington desperately needs a spark after getting completely dismantled 27-10 by the Philadelphia Eagles last week. They are walking into a buzzsaw against a Rams defense that just suffocated the Los Angeles Chargers in a 24-9 win.
Sunday evening is going to be a pure volume test for Diggs and Williams. If the Commanders want to keep pace with the Rams, those two are going to have to play nearly every snap. Otherwise, Washington might have to start pulling fans out of the stands to run slant routes.
