The Charlotte Hornets are already in midseason form, and by that, I mean they are already dealing with training camp injuries.
According to Marc Stein, guard Coby White suffered a left calf strain during camp and is officially shut down for the entirety of the preseason.
"Marc Stein reported: 'The Hornets say Coby White suffered a left calf strain during training camp and will miss the team’s preseason games.'"
Calf strains are basically the check engine light of the NBA. You absolutely do not want to ignore them, especially in early October when the games literally do not matter. The Hornets are making the obvious choice to keep him in bubble wrap until the regular season actually tips off.
Charlotte kicks off their exhibition schedule against the Brooklyn Nets on October 6. With White out of the mix, the backcourt rotation is going to look a lot different for anyone sick enough to be sweating preseason NBA totals or player props.
Missing preseason is not the end of the world, but it does rob us of the annual tradition of overreacting to a guy shooting 60 percent against a roster of dudes who will be playing overseas by November. Now White just has to focus on rehab instead of getting up meaningless reps.
The real question is whether this calf issue lingers into the regular season. For now, the Hornets will have to figure out their backcourt depth chart while White watches from the bench in a very expensive sweatsuit.
