Jaxson Dart's Season-Ending Surgery Hands the Giants Over to the Jameis Winston Experience

The New York Giants' season just went from a promising new era to a full-blown crisis in exactly seven snaps. Head coach John Harbaugh confirmed on Tuesday that quarterback Jaxson Dart needs knee surgery and is effectively done for the year.

Harbaugh left the door cracked for a miraculous postseason return, which is a nice sentiment. But that requires actually making the playoffs, a task that now falls squarely on the shoulders of the Jameis Winston experience.

Dart looked like a legitimate star in Week 1. He carved up the Dallas Cowboys for 230 passing yards, three touchdowns, and another 54 yards on the ground. It was the exact kind of performance that makes a fanbase start looking at January hotel prices.

Then Monday night happened. On the opening drive against the Los Angeles Rams, Dart took a hit from linebacker Byron Young and got undercut by Josaiah Stewart. He limped to the blue medical tent, the Giants got rolled 28-6, and the MRI confirmed the worst.

Now the offense belongs to Winston, who the front office just handed a two-year, $13 million extension. If his relief appearance on Monday was any indicator—11 completions on 27 attempts for 111 yards and an interception—anyone holding Giants futures or starting their receivers in fantasy needs to pivot immediately.

The only silver lining is the immediate schedule. New York gets the 0-2 Tennessee Titans next, followed by the Arizona Cardinals and a Washington Commanders team that just lost Jayden Daniels to an elbow injury.

Surviving a soft schedule is one thing, but doing it while completely retooling your offense on the fly is another. The Giants have to figure out how to win with their backup, or Dart's hypothetical playoff return is just going to be a very expensive sideline pass.
