The NFL’s Commissioner Exempt list is basically a waiting room where the league stashes players until they figure out how the public relations math shakes out. After spending the first month and a half of the season in that shadow realm, Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs is officially checking out.
Adam Schefter reported Friday that Jacobs will be removed from the list on Monday and is expected to be eligible for Week 7. Naturally, the NFL added a disclaimer that the investigation remains open. That is just corporate speak for reserving the right to suspend him again if a bad video suddenly hits the timeline.
"Adam Schefter reported the investigation will remain open for the NFL so it reserves the right to add further discipline if and when warranted."
Jacobs has been sidelined since the season started following a May arrest that led to misdemeanor battery and criminal damage charges. He has been actively suing to keep the police video of the incident permanently sealed. While that legal battle played out, Green Bay had to figure out how to replace a guy who punched in 13 touchdowns and ran for 929 yards last season.
The Packers just dismantled the Chicago Bears 31-7 to find some offensive rhythm, but dropping a fresh Jacobs back into the mix completely changes the geometry of their offense. It also turns the Week 7 betting markets into a total guessing game. Trying to project rushing props for a star running back who just spent six weeks locked out of the building is a great way to lose your mind.
Green Bay hosts the Dallas Cowboys next. Jacobs is cleared to suit up, but nobody knows if he gets a full workload or a pitch count. And with the league explicitly keeping his file open, every carry comes with the looming threat that the NFL could still drop the hammer whenever it feels convenient.
