Kyle Shanahan Downplays Christian McCaffrey's Muscle Tightness, But We've Seen This Movie Before

The annual late-summer tradition of parsing Kyle Shanahan’s medical updates has officially returned to Santa Clara. San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey is currently sitting out of practice with what the team is casually calling muscle tightness.

According to Adam Schefter, Shanahan claims his star back would have been on the field Tuesday if it weren’t a joint practice against the Los Angeles Chargers. The team also made sure to clarify that this absence has absolutely nothing to do with his contract.

Hearing a coach downplay an August injury is standard operating procedure, but 49ers fans have every right to be deeply suspicious of the word tightness. We all remember the 2024 training camp where a minor calf issue magically evolved into Achilles tendinitis and an eight-game stint on injured reserve.

The math on McCaffrey is starting to get terrifying. He is now 30 years old and coming off a 2025 campaign where he led the NFL with a staggering 413 regular-season touches. He racked up 1,202 rushing yards and caught 102 passes, pushing his career workload well past 2,200 touches.

When a running back with that kind of mileage gets tight muscles, you do not just rub some dirt on it and throw him into a meaningless scrimmage. Shanahan even admitted his biggest fear is McCaffrey trying to tough it out and tearing something that costs him a month of the season.

This is the exact type of update that sends a cold shiver down the spine of fantasy managers and anyone holding San Francisco futures tickets. You simply cannot invest heavy capital into this offense without accepting that their most important weapon requires extreme proactive maintenance.

The 49ers face the Chargers in an actual preseason game on August 21, an exhibition McCaffrey will obviously be watching in sweatpants. If he is back on the practice field next week, we can all laugh this off as veteran rest, but if the tightness lingers, it is officially time to panic.
