To make the money work, the Leafs had to take out the Columbus trash. Merzlikins just had shoulder surgery in August, failed his training camp physical, and is sitting on non-roster injured reserve after posting a brutal .883 save percentage last year. Wood literally just hit the waiver wire a few days ago and has three years left on a deal that pays him to mostly skate fast and take penalties. Columbus even retained 18 percent of the Merzlikins contract just to push the deal across the finish line.

On the other side, Columbus gets a massive haul of youth and cap flexibility. Knies is only 23 years old and already locked into a long-term deal, giving the Blue Jackets a legitimate core piece to build around. Moving off the Merzlikins and Wood contracts is a front-office masterclass that completely shifts their rebuild timeline.
