The Atlanta Falcons are running a real-life quarterback battle in late August, and the practice stats are already generating group-chat panic.
Michael Penix Jr. just got cleared for 11-on-11 drills after recovering from his latest ACL tear, and according to ESPN's Marc Raimondi, he immediately made things uncomfortable for Tua Tagovailoa. During a simulated regular-season Wednesday practice, Penix took first-team reps and went 4-of-8 passing. Tua, meanwhile, stepped up and delivered a pristine 0-for-3 line.
"ESPN's Marc Raimondi reported Penix's second completion to London was an 'excellent throw on a crossing route.'"
Penix did not just check the ball down to the practice squad guys, either. Raimondi noted he hit Drake London twice—including a gorgeous crossing route—and found Kyle Pitts twice. When your young quarterback is instantly locking onto your two most important pass-catchers, the coaching staff tends to notice.
Having a quarterback competition between two guys with medical charts thicker than a George R.R. Martin novel is objectively terrifying for Atlanta fans. Tua has a well-documented history of concussions and a recent back issue, while Penix is coming off a 2025 ACL tear that ruined his season. Betting on this quarterback room to stay healthy for 17 games feels like playing blackjack with a deck of Uno cards, but right now, Penix looks like the better gamble.
With Cooper Rush and Jack Strand relegated to jog-through duty, this is strictly a two-man race. Head coach Kevin Stefanski has a massive decision to make before Week 1. Anyone holding a preseason ticket on Tua to start the opener might want to start sweating, because Penix is officially coming for the job.
