Odell Beckham Jr. Signs With the Vikings Because Time is a Flat Circle

The annual tradition of Odell Beckham Jr. joining a roster mid-season has officially arrived. Per Jordan Schultz, the veteran wide receiver is signing with the Minnesota Vikings.

At this point in his career, an OBJ signing is less about shifting the balance of power in the NFC and more about adding a very famous piece of duct tape to a depth chart. But for a Minnesota team looking to bolster its receiving corps, it is a low-risk roll of the dice.

The Vikings are coming off a gritty, if completely unwatchable, 15-10 win over the Miami Dolphins. When your offense is grinding out 15 points to secure a victory, you start looking under every couch cushion for a spark.

Beckham brings a massive brand and a highlight reel that still lives rent-free in the minds of defensive backs, even if the tape is getting a little dusty. Expecting 2015 Odell is a setup for disappointment, but expecting a guy who can move the chains on third down and draw a favorable matchup in the red zone is entirely reasonable.

From a market perspective, this is the exact type of move that makes casual bettors rush to hammer Vikings futures or sprinkle money on Beckham anytime touchdown props. The reality is usually much quieter, as he will need time to learn the playbook and get his legs under him before making a dent in the box score.

The immediate question is how quickly Minnesota throws him into the fire. Keep an eye on the practice reports this week to see if the newest Viking gets a package of plays drawn up for his debut, or if he spends his first Sunday in purple holding a clipboard.
