Saints Learn an Expensive Lesson as Travis Etienne Jr. Hits the Shelf

The New Orleans Saints just learned a very expensive lesson about soft-tissue injuries. Head coach Kellen Moore confirmed that running back Travis Etienne Jr. will miss time after aggravating a hamstring issue, which is exactly what happens when you roll out a guy who spent the week limited in practice with that exact same injury.

According to ESPN's Katherine Terrell and Adam Schefter, the inevitable occurred during Sunday's 35-27 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. Etienne managed 13 carries for 57 yards before his leg decided it had seen enough.

For context, the Saints just handed Etienne a four-year, $52 million contract in March. Paying a premium for a running back in the year 2026 is already a philosophical gamble. Watching your shiny new investment immediately re-injure himself in Week 3 because nobody wanted to play it safe is a full-blown organizational self-own.

This leaves the New Orleans backfield in a state of absolute chaos. Moore had already been rotating Etienne with Alvin Kamara and Kendre Miller, but now the workload is going to shift dramatically. If you are holding Etienne in fantasy or trying to handicap Saints rushing props, it is time to pivot hard.

Soft-tissue injuries do not just vanish on a Tuesday. Etienne has a history here, having dealt with hamstring issues back in his Jacksonville Jaguars days in 2024. The Saints have zero incentive to rush him back now and risk turning a multi-week absence into a lost season.

Expect Kamara and Miller to absorb the bulk of the touches moving forward, with CJ Donaldson mixing in. Moore promised another update soon, but you can safely assume Etienne will be wearing sweatpants on the sideline for the foreseeable future.
