August football is back, which means we are officially in the season of vague soft-tissue injuries.
The New Orleans Saints are the latest victims. Head coach Kellen Moore announced that rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson has a right hamstring issue and will miss time, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter via Katherine Terrell.
"Saints coach Kellen Moore confirmed Tyson has a right hamstring issue and will miss time."
Hearing "will miss time" in the middle of August is the exact phrase no rookie wants attached to their name. Training camp reps are the only currency that matters when you are trying to climb an NFL depth chart and earn the trust of your coaching staff.
Hamstrings are basically the check engine light of the human body. You can try to ignore the warning for a little bit, but eventually, the whole machine is going to shut down on the highway. For a wide receiver whose entire job relies on explosive bursts and sudden stops, a bad hammy is a mandatory pause button.
The Saints are gearing up to play the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 15. Instead of using that preseason matchup to put good tape out there, Tyson will now be watching the action in sweatpants.
From a betting perspective, preseason totals are already a complete coin flip. But losing young, hungry receivers who actually want to run routes in the fourth quarter makes those late-game offensive drives even uglier to watch.
Now the clock is ticking. Tyson has to get his leg right before the regular season kicks off, or he risks getting buried on the New Orleans depth chart before his rookie campaign even gets out of the driveway.
What's next
Tyson will miss the upcoming preseason game against the Jaguars, and his timeline to return before Week 1 remains uncertain as he rehabilitates the hamstring.
