UFC Sacramento Leaves Both Main Eventers With Possible Broken Legs

Mixed martial arts is the only sport on earth where you can win the main event and still leave the arena looking like you just lost a fight with a woodchipper. According to MMA Fighting, both Anthony Hernandez and Gregory Rodrigues are staring down medical suspensions for possible broken legs following their five-round war at UFC Sacramento.

Rodrigues pulled off the upset via a 48-47 decision, cashing tickets for anyone who backed him as a +185 underdog. But the victory lap is going to be strictly metaphorical. Footage surfaced of "Robocop" leaving the arena in a walking boot and a wheelchair, which is objectively hilarious until you remember he was the guy who actually won the fight.

The damage makes perfect sense if you watched the broadcast. Rodrigues spent 25 minutes treating Hernandez’s lead leg like a rented mule. He dropped the hometown favorite multiple times with brutal low kicks, completely compromising Hernandez's base and mobility to secure the crucial fourth round.

Hernandez deserves some kind of medal for simply refusing to quit. He was a -225 betting favorite coming in, and despite his leg being absolute toast by the second round, he somehow kept wrestling his way back to his feet. There is tough, and then there is fighting 15 more minutes on a pulverized tibia.

Now the middleweight division has to wait while both guys heal up. Medical suspensions in combat sports are usually just a formality, but a double broken-leg scenario means neither fighter is booking a return trip to the octagon anytime soon. Whoever they fight next should probably just send a get-well card and enjoy the time off.
